Overview: The American Staffordshire Terrier is not a new breed. Although it gained American Kennel Club registration and recognition in 1936, it has been developed since the early 1800s as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed that country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead and for general companionship.
Character: This dog is loyal, tough on itself, and tenacious. It makes a good watchdog, has lots of stamina, and can be domineering over other dogs.
Temperament: Provided proper socialization has taken place, this breed gets along fine with cats or other household pets. It makes a good family dog as long as the family can handle its boisterousness. It will protect your home, and it may be eager to fight other dogs.
Care: Remove dead and loose hairs periodically with a rubber brush.
Training: The American Staffordshire Bull Terrier must be taught at an early age not to pull on the leash, as it becomes very strong when fully grown. It can learn a great deal if consistently trained.
Activity: The American Staffordshire Bull Terrier needs plenty of exercise. It enjoys running alongside a bicycle or catching a ball. It also enjoys playing fetch.
